Hilo mission’s Hatsu Bon set

Hilo mission’s Hatsu Bon set

Hilo Higashi Hongwanji Mission will host its Hatsu Bon on Aug. 13 at the mission, 216 Mohouli St.

The Hatsu Bon, paying homage to and remembering those who passed away within the past 12 months, begins with a service at 6 p.m. followed by bon dancing at 7 p.m. Food items (andagi, hot dog, etc.) and refreshments will be available for purchase at the concession.

“Come early and enjoy the various foods at the concession before it runs out,” said David Kohara, Higashi chairman.

Obon also is a time to reunite with family and friends. An Ura Bon (day after obon) service is at 10 a.m. Aug. 14. The public is welcome to attend the services and the bon dance. The events are free.

Bon dance practice will be from 7-8:30 p.m. Aug. 2 and 9 at the temple social hall, also free to the public.

For more information, call the Rev. Marcos Sawada at 935-8968.

Beaudet joins KS division

Kamehameha Schools named former Parker Ranch land manager Brandi Beaudet the director of ‘Aina Engagement — a position within KS’ Community and Engage-ment and Resources Group.

Beaudet, who assumed his new role in April, is responsible for leading KS’ ‘aina-based education operations, which include linking land, water, technology and sustainability to educational efforts in the community and connecting Hawaii’s learners of all ages to KS lands.

Beaudet worked as a land manager for Parker Ranch for 16 years. He was responsible for resource and contract management, project development, government relations and community engagement.

While at Parker Ranch, he also was part of the organizing party for the Kohala Watershed Partnership and the West Hawaii Wildlife Management Organization.

Lyman Museum Archives closed

The Lyman Museum Archives is now closed through Aug. 31.

Research requests will be taken starting Sept. 1. On that date, a new archivist, Eric Page, will be on staff.

Throughout the summer, the museum will continue to receive identifications for the Pierce photographs from the Pierce Photo ID project that the Hawaii Tribune-Herald features on Saturdays (unidentified photos) and Wednesdays (identified photos).

For Pierce photo identification purposes, contact Jill Maruyama at 935-5021 or jillm@lymanmuseum.org.
